Visited the Drum Tower in Beijing. Originally build in the 13th Century, this was part of the city's time keeping system, right up till the last century. Hugh building, with very steep stairs up to the top level. Today the only drums sounded are not for telling time, but a 5 min performance for tourists.
All very dramatic & loud within the gallery.
The type of drums used here are more famously used by Japanese groups like Kodo these days.
How much the sound is like ancient times is questionable & I wish I'd also heard them from outside. But then again, perhaps now with all the traffic noise, they may not be heard.
